- "I do
not have a conscious memory of taking most of these
pictures. I was on total autopilot the day of the attack. I
dont really remember finding that statue covered in
debris."
- "I
can barely recall these firefighters who are struggling to
clean out their eyes though, looking at it now, I can
remember exactly how much my own eyes burned from the
smoke."
- "I
shot 14 rolls of film the afternoon of the attack. Im not a
war photographer, so this wasnt an easy experience for me.
The constantly shattering glass was terrifying and
distracting, and my camera kept getting completely covered
in ash. But because for years I have been taking documentary
pictures of New Yorkers out on the sidewalks, there is a way
in which I was prepared. It sounds crazy to say it, but
these images are a direct extension of what Ive been doing
all along: capturing life on the streets of this city."
SkFriends Note: Believe the statue in photo 1 is J. Seward
Johnson Jr.'s super realist sculpture of a corporate foot
soldier but can't be sure. |
